The Eastern Division: no matter how you polish it, it still smells like a turd. Fourteen games into the season and one can peruse the standings in the Eastern Division and see the anomalies. Baltimore, Manchester and Montreal all lead the division with .500 records at 7-7. Manchester and Baltimore, the premier rivals in the league, have lost three straight, and little orphan Montreal had to win four of their last six just to get to their breakeven point. A betting man would have Manchester winning the division at six to one odds, but that same man could roll in comfort with two to one odds that say that the division stinks. Since interdivision play has started, Manchester has been embarrassed by dropped two in-a-row to Savannah, and Baltimore has been pummeled by Virginia and underperforming Johnson City. While the other divisions have a team already sporting ten wins, it appears as if it might take six or seven more games for the East to get one. Talk about an ugly divisional race. The East is making the Chicago Cubs look like the greatest team in Major League Baseball history.

In other news, can anyone beat Boulder? With only fourteen games down, the Bunions already have a five game divisional lead. With one more win, they will clinch their second ten-game winning streak in team history. That’s more than any other team by two. It’s rumored that Boulder fans have already started gobbling up postseason tickets at a record pace. Predictably enough, they are only buying four at a time. The Goldblum Cup looks to already been birthing a twin at Boulder’s headquarters.

Wichita, Wichita, Wichita, let me count the ways. It seems that expelling Virginia from the Central Division was the best thing that ever happened to the Somethings. They’re 10-4 and cruising. Is it possible that those hopeful preseason predictions were actually correct with regard to them?

Doing the Charleston, but not too loudly. The Windjammers are also 10-4 but hold a slim one game lead over scrappy Virginia. Maybe it is sad to criticize a team for losing two of their last four, but with all due respect, Charleston was dominating the early season. Now their series with Baltimore later in the week look extremely crucial. Virginia, sitting tight at 9-5, would love to spoil Charleston’s swing with a down-home southern-fried dance of its own.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – It was divisional leaders facing off; it was game one. And on a relatively mild (77 degrees) San Antonio day, the league-leading Sleepers (19-11) stayed awake long enough to hold off the Eastern-leading Monarchs (17-13), 2-1. Larry Russell had a key RBI in the third inning, and Bryan Mitchell had another in the fourth that San Antonio up 2-0. It was all they would need. In the top of the ninth, Manchester’s Walt Lloyd scored a two-out RBI, but Paul Carter flew out to center on the very next pitch.

“It’s a big win,” Brandon Caldwell, the Sleeper’s manager said. “When two heavyweights collide on the field us and them did, it always provides fireworks. Today, most of the fireworks were defensive, and luckily, we have a pretty good defense.”

San Antonio ranks first in the league in runs allowed per game. The two teams meet again on Saturday.

NORFOLK, VA – The Virginia Opossums (17-13) notched a crucial victory over divisional foe Wichita (13-17), 12-4, on Tuesday evening. Harvey Simon proved the hero by jacking three home runs and six RBIs. His performance puts him right back into an already tight MVP race. He has 8 home runs and 24 RBIs on the season.

For Virginia, the win extends their Central Division lead to four games. If they can sweep the three-game series with the Somethings, the division might prove a runaway, and Opossums fans can go ahead and starting ordering playoff tickets.

In other scores:

Baltimore Ninjas (15-15) 1, Tacoma Aroma (15-15) 2

Hawai’i Kats (15-15) 6, Charleston Windjammers (14-16) 11

Montreal Flatliners (14-16) 5, Johnson City Fuckhectors (12-18) 6

Boulder Bunions (18-12) 1, Whisker City Fighting Lionelles (12-18) 2

For a team that started the season 2-7, the Boulder Bunions have a lot to be thankful for. One thing is that Leonard Strike never really slumped. He leads the league in hits (40), RBIs (23), and home runs (10), and he is fourth in the league with a .364 batting average. The Bunions should also be thankful that the rest of the team has finally stepped up. Jeff Marma is batting .369, and Daniel Smith is hitting .358. Marma, Strike and Smith take up three spots in the top five batting averages in the league, and the Bunions are a perfect 10-0 in their last ten games. With their win on Saturday and San Antonio’s loss, the Bunions have catapulted themselves into a first-place tie in the Western Division. That’s not too bad for a team that started the season fighting for dead last in the entire league.

The Virginia Opossums have dropped their last three games, but, all in all, they don’t have much to worry about. They still hold a two game lead over Wichita in the Central Division, and they look poised to secure a playoff spot as the last quarter of the season begins. Virginia is the second-best pitching team in the league with William Ecklund holding a 1.89 ERA, and Joel Wingard earning 8 saves. Virginia only allows 3.3 runs per game while batting in 3.7 themselves. This statistic usually adds up to a winning franchise.

The Eastern Division is still up for grabs. The Baltimore Ninjas are still hanging around despite injuries to their best hitter (Kenneth Donaldson) and their best pitcher (Rex Rivera). They are currently two games back of the Manchester Monarchs, but Manchester has to open a three game series at San Antonio on Tuesday. Baltimore, conversely, travels to Tacoma to face an Aroma team who ranks last in the Western Division. It appears that the Eastern race will not render a decision until the season wanes to a close.

With the playoffs approaching, here’s a look at the all-important playoff picture and wildcard race:

BH HALL OF THE IMMORTALS – As the inaugural Blue House Baseball season reached its halfway point, the league announced its first ever All-Star Team this week. The announcement was accompanied by a ceremony at the Blue House Hall of the Immortals earlier today. Leading the league with the most votes was Charleston Windjammers left fielder John Mayer. Second was Manchester’s right fielder Michael Dawson. The Hawai’i Kats had the most selections with four.

While the league will not have an official all-star game this season, the league is in talks with four unnamed cities regarding expansion franchises. League officials stated that these potential franchises would expand the league into two separate leagues, like the National and American, and therefore, enable a true all-star game. As of now, the all-star team is merely an honor.

Here is the team:

JOHNSON CITY, TN – The Johnson City Fuckhectors earned a well-needed win over the Baltimore Ninjas on Saturday afternoon. Timothy Jenson knocked in a home run and three RBIs en route to the win. Prior to the win, Johnson City (3-8) had lost six straight games. “It felt good,” manager Mike Huie said. “I only hope we can keep this thing going.”

For Baltimore (7-4), the loss may prove to be a minor drawback in a very close Eastern Division race. The Ninjas are in tight competition with Montreal and Manchester for the top spot. Baltimore will return to Johnson City on Tuesday to close out a three-game series.

MANCHESTER, NH – The Charleston Windjammers picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday with a 9-4 thumping of Manchester. Grant Hughett hit two home runs to lead the Charleston (1-6) attack. It was the first instance all year of the Windjammer’s defense supporting the productive offense as Manchester (4-3) was held to four runs on seven hits. “It’s about time,” Josh Hughett said of the win. “For a minute there, I thought the baseball gods were infinitely against us.”

For Manchester, the loss marks their second in a row, and guarantees them a second-place tie in the Eastern Division. The lead now goes to the winner of the Balitmore versus Montreal game later today. Charleston and Manchester meet again on Tuesday for game two of their three-game series.

HONOLULU – Tacoma finally hit home runs by smashing two en route to a 7-5 upset of then-undefeated Hawai’i. Although, the Aroma finally displayed an efficient offense, it still took ten innings to put away the Kats. The big moment came in the top of the tenth when Lewis Salers hit a two-run homer that put Tacoma (2-4) up for good. Brian Iafratti also hit his first home run of the season.

For Hawai’i (5-1), the loss marks their first of the season, and it destroyed the visage of invincibility they had accrued through the first weeks of the season. The Kats, however, still command a one-game lead in the Western Division as they are set to begin a six-game home stand with San Antonio on Saturday. Tacoma finally gets to travel home after six games to play Boulder on Saturday.

WICHITA, KS – Wichita ended its series with Virginia by defeating the Opossums 2-0 on Tuesday night. The game looked to be a defense stalemate, but Delmar Harris and Larry Heikkinen both batted in runs to give the Somethings the victory. The game also gave the Somethings (4-2) a two games to three win in the overall series. Wichita now moves into a first-place tie with Whisker City in the Central Division.

Virginia (2-4) lost their second straight game for the first time this season. Their offense failed to produce, and only tallied six hits for the entire game. Their only highlight was a double by Jeffrey Hansen. Virginia heads home to play Whisker City on Saturday. That same day, Wichita stays in their own ballpark to play Johnson City.

SAN ANTONIO – Despite spotting three early runs, the San Antonio Sleepers awoke and brought out the bats in an 8-4 win over Boulder on Tuesday. The Sleepers (4-2) got their second straight win on the strength of their inconsistent offense. Howard Hedges, a hero of Saturday’s 1-0 win, knocked in three runs, and Tony Kendrick added another two. The win places San Antonio right in the heart of the Western Division race.

Boulder (1-5) struggled with its pitching, as Lacey Reynolds allowed eight runs in five and one-third innings. Reynolds oversaw a sixth inning collapse that doomed the Bunions. Leonard Strike went three for five with three RBIs. He has proven to be the only consistency on an otherwise lackluster offense. Boulder flies to Tacoma to place the Aroma on Saturday, while San Antonio starts a six-game series with first-place Hawai’i.

JOHNSON CITY, TN – Whisker City cruised past the Johnson City Fuckhectors on Tuesday with a 4-0 win. The Fighting Lionelles (4-2) were led, once again, by William Lord who smashed his third home run of the year. Clark Davis went six scoreless innings before David Foster came in and finished off Johnson City. The victory guarantees Whisker City a share of the Central Division lead depending on the outcome of the Wichita/Virginia game later today.

Johnson City (2-4) has been showing signs of trouble on offense against a stout Whisker City defense. Ron Tharpe had the only offense highlight of the game with a double off of Clark Davis. Johnson City heads to Wichita on Saturday to close out divisional play with a three-game series against the Somethings. Whisker City travels to Norfolk to face the Virginia Opossums.
