Boulder Moves into First Place

For a team that started the season 2-7, the Boulder Bunions have a lot to be thankful for. One thing is that Leonard Strike never really slumped. He leads the league in hits (40), RBIs (23), and home runs (10), and he is fourth in the league with a .364 batting average. The Bunions should also be thankful that the rest of the team has finally stepped up. Jeff Marma is batting .369, and Daniel Smith is hitting .358. Marma, Strike and Smith take up three spots in the top five batting averages in the league, and the Bunions are a perfect 10-0 in their last ten games. With their win on Saturday and San Antonio’s loss, the Bunions have catapulted themselves into a first-place tie in the Western Division. That’s not too bad for a team that started the season fighting for dead last in the entire league.

The Virginia Opossums have dropped their last three games, but, all in all, they don’t have much to worry about. They still hold a two game lead over Wichita in the Central Division, and they look poised to secure a playoff spot as the last quarter of the season begins. Virginia is the second-best pitching team in the league with William Ecklund holding a 1.89 ERA, and Joel Wingard earning 8 saves. Virginia only allows 3.3 runs per game while batting in 3.7 themselves. This statistic usually adds up to a winning franchise.

The Eastern Division is still up for grabs. The Baltimore Ninjas are still hanging around despite injuries to their best hitter (Kenneth Donaldson) and their best pitcher (Rex Rivera). They are currently two games back of the Manchester Monarchs, but Manchester has to open a three game series at San Antonio on Tuesday. Baltimore, conversely, travels to Tacoma to face an Aroma team who ranks last in the Western Division. It appears that the Eastern race will not render a decision until the season wanes to a close.

JC Gets First Win in Seven Games

JOHNSON CITY, TN – The Johnson City Fuckhectors earned a well-needed win over the Baltimore Ninjas on Saturday afternoon. Timothy Jenson knocked in a home run and three RBIs en route to the win. Prior to the win, Johnson City (3-8) had lost six straight games. “It felt good,” manager Mike Huie said. “I only hope we can keep this thing going.”

For Baltimore (7-4), the loss may prove to be a minor drawback in a very close Eastern Division race. The Ninjas are in tight competition with Montreal and Manchester for the top spot. Baltimore will return to Johnson City on Tuesday to close out a three-game series.

Butter Maker leads Monarchs over Baltimore

MANCHESTER, NH – Manchester propelled into first place in the Eastern Division on Saturday with a shutout win over Baltimore 6-0. The Monarchs (4-1) were led by star pitcher Butter Maker, who racked up nine strikeouts and even hit a home run. Baltimore (3-2) is on a two-game skid that began with their trip to Manchester. The Ninjas were unable to get their bats going. They were not able to get anything better than a single for the entirety of the ball game. Manchester, on the other hand, had two doubles, a triple, and two home runs.

The teams wrap up their series on Tuesday.

Baltimore’s Bats Crush Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC - Four different Baltimore Ninjas homered in a 12-5 victory over the home-standing Charleston Windjammers. The scoring started early as the Ninjas (1-0) built a 10-0 lead by the fourth inning. They would not let up after that. Kenneth Donaldson went 4 for 5 with a homer. Alvin Abram added a three-run shot that sailed with the wind like an Atlantic schooner.

All in all, the Ninjas record 17 hits compared to the Windjammers’ 11. Charleston (0-1) debuted in the newly built I.O.P. Park that was described by many baseball critics as “the most beautiful ball park in the league”. The Windjammers’ glorious premiere, however, was undercut by the big bats of Baltimore. Paul Daulhausser proved to be the opening star for Charleston by going 3 for 4 and driving in a run.

“They just played harder,” Josh Hughett, the Windjammers’ manager said following the loss. “They (Ninjas) seemed more prepared for the windy condition than we were.” The two teams meet again on Tuesday at I.O.P. Park.
