Wichita Outlasts Whisker City in Marathon
WHISKER CITY – After 16 innings, the Wichita Somethings finally defeated the tenacious Whisker City Fighting Lionelles. After both teams battled back and forth, they went into extra innings tied at 4. In the top of the 13th, Wichita (1-0) added three runs to make it 7-4. Whisker City (0-1), however, would not go out quietly. They tied it up quickly and sent the game to the 14th.
In the top of the 16th, it would be Ward Dejesus that hit the game-winner with a 380 foot shot to left field. Whisker City was getting runners in scoring position in the bottom of the inning, but failed to convert. Wichita held on for an 8-7 opening day victory.
“It was not a sprint, that’s for sure,” Rob Gregory, Wichita’s manager stated. “I’m just happy that we held on. They’re a tough team, and we were fortunate to fight them off.” The two teams will meet again on Tuesday in game two of a three game series.
